Sprout

Here in Winson the world was visibly turning green.
Not that you’d have seen.
Did you not want to see the allotment emerge from frost?
See your granddaughter (so nearly lost!) mark her first birthday?
See your four children (another so nearly lost!) reach their prime?

No, once again they were not in your mind.
Just you yourself alone.
I can’t imagine what clever introspective tricks you played on yourself to find the clinching proofs.

So today I’m not going to watch that pain
And join in eulogising your ego
Whatever our shared history.
(Not that you ever acknowledged it).

Today my job is to stay here and glorify the new green
And to protect and defend my own dear one – and myself  -from a pointless trip
To swell those watching your dear ones
Damaged again on top of old wounds still not healed
Laugh at good times gone and weep their eyes raw. Here in Winson the world was visibly turning green.
