Apocalypse? Now!

Friday 2 October

All night we heard the rain on the roof
Shushing and sighing down
As Storm Alex swept northwestward
Leaving a sodden Italy and France in its wake
And halting wetly over our heads.

The clock marked the night in half hours
The night went on and on with fearful dreams.
We woke coughing in unison
To discover Trump had tramped to his helicopter and been whisked away…

Not much coughing really. Not really continuous. Just a cold.

Saturday morning. Ok better fill in the app. Cough. Mild fatigue. No fever.
Get a test! Self isolate for 9 days! What a farce!
But we were fine really. Nothing else to report.
Lost interest in food a bit. Happy to not have to go out. Ticking over fine.
Just needed that afternoon nap every day…

Test arrived on Tuesday mid-afternoon courtesy of Amazon! Stressful plethora of instructions. Impossible to hit the back of the throat with that damn swab for 10 seconds! Rushed it into the post as required.

Time to try and cancel that trip to Ramsgate. ‘Sorry, We are experiencing high call numbers. The current waiting time is 30 minutes’.

Finally get a person after 45 minutes.
I didn’t have to play act being a little old lady feeling unwell because I was.
Have you had your test result?
She finally decided I’d convinced her enough and cancelled it…

The car was harder. App was impenetrable.
Mike finally found somewhere we could write something. ‘I have Covid. Please can I postpone till March?’
Within the hour a person wrote an email saying sorry to hear that and yes. Phew. Waves of relief. Back to the sofa…

Friday came – 9 0ctober. Heard from Judith. Of course – John’s 80th birthday – and I’d forgotten! She sent me a nice picture of Mendips on her way to the hairdressers. Don’t think Mimi would’ve liked that side gate! We promised we’d visit together eventually. One Fine Day.

Lying down upstairs after lunch in the usual state of suspended animation. 2.45 – beepbeep…

Fumble blearily for phone…

WHAT! THAT CAN”T BE RIGHT!

But suddenly, that explained it all.

Though the mystery of just where we had found our own particular viral cloud remains unsolved…
