Walking slowly through
For an hour and a half or so
From 1540 to 1800
What you take away
To ponder over coffee
And on the bus home
Is the way the gaze
Finally comes to life to return your look
Enlivened by that speck of highlighting white
Placed in the eye.
And how suddenly
Round about 1620
Someone smiles out at you too.
And you can’t help but smile back
Across the centuries
